Location, location, location
Ditch the fast food joints for a healthier, more wholesome style of restaurant. These days there are so many options to suit different tastes and different budgets, it’s increasingly difficult to justify going the burgers and fries route. Why not be adventurous and try something new with each outing?
A tiny sip does it
Drinking can raise your kilojoule intake in a meal significantly. If you must drink, try to take it easy and stick to a glass or two of good quality wine, and drink plenty of water. Drink a glass of water after every glass of wine to keep yourself hydrated.
Say “no” to fried potato
When choosing your side, avoid chips and fries at all costs. Also avoid anything too creamy and rich as a side. Instead, fill up on salad or vegetables. Ask for an extra-large portion if the salads and vegetables are served as more of a garnish, as this can sometimes be too small a quantity to satisfy hunger which will temp you to splurge on other, less nutritious food groups.
Be sparing with sauces
Instead of smothering your salad in rich creamy dressing, and drowning your main in gravy or sauce, be as sparing as possible as these devilish liquids are often loaded with fat and kilojoules. Rather ask for the lowest-fat option, and ask for it on the side. That way you can control how much sauce you add to each bite, and remember the golden rule – a little goes a long way. Use a mix of lemon juice, brown sugar, olive oil and your favourite herbs to replace that fattening dressing.
Look for the “healthy-option”
Many restaurants today ensure that they provide wholesome, nutritious and low-kilojoule options for their more health-conscious customers. Over the years variety and taste have really improved, there are some delicious choices available. Look out for “healthy-option” icon on menus, or ask your server to give their recommendations.
“All-you-can-eat” is the enemy
It’s simply unnecessary; always steer clear of these buffet-style establishments. Don’t be fooled by the illusion of saving money, so long as you’re prepared to eat a kilogram of food. Nobody should eat that much and you’re really not saving at all if you do.
No sugar, Canderel please
To significantly decrease kilojoule intake, always use Canderel instead of sugar. It can be used to sweeten hot and cold drinks, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, desserts etc.
