A treat can really do wonders for the body and mind, and it’s so important that we take the time for some personal feel-good moments. It’s so easy to get caught up in taking care of our partner’s/kids’/friends’ needs, were love to make them feel special, but sometimes we forget that we are just as deserving of our own thoughtfulness.
We don’t necessarily mean you need to regularly spend hours in a luxury resort (but if you can, go for it!). There are also so many small and simple things you can do for yourself that will boost your spirits and general sense of wellbeing. So go on, do yourself a favour, and make treating yourself a priority. Here are just a few ideas:
Cook for the enjoyment of it
Whether you decide to make your absolute favourite dish, or decide to experiment and have some fun with a new, exotic recipe, take some time out where you’re cooking for the love of it, not just the necessity (moms- you know what I mean). Put on some music, pour a glass of wine, and allow yourself your creative inner-chef to emerge. Relax and have fun with it, it’s just for you after all! And if you’re concerned about the extra kJ’s that your chosen dish may carry, not to worry - make some healthy substitutions, such as replacing sugar with Canderel in any meals, sauces, desserts and drinks, and enjoy all of the indulgence without the guilt.

The classic tri-bubble combo
One of my ultimate me-time treats is taking a long, lazy bubble bath, enjoyed with a delectable slab of Canderel Bubble and a sparkling glass of good quality bubbly. Pure heaven!
Give some cuddles
Playing with your kids, snuggling up to your loved ones and even to your pets has been shown to release serotonin and other feel-good chemicals in the brain. Being physically affectionate has actually been proven to reduce blood pressure, and definitely makes everyone feel good: a win-win situation for sure!
Retail therapy
Pretty self-explanatory. It’s hard to find a lady who doesn’t enjoy a good shopping session. And we’re not talking groceries and stationery for back to school – retail therapy strictly entails only gifts to yourself and things that sparkle.
Make time to see your friends
With all the activities that fill up our day to day lives, sometimes we find ourselves neglecting our friendships and losing touch. Clear some time in your calendar and make some plans to do something fun with your friends. Whether you decide to go out for a mid-week dinner or cocktail hour, or you decide to do a full on weekend away, there is something about spending time with your buddies that just makes you feel more like yourself. You won’t regret the time spent, and neither will they.
Call your mom
Enough said.
Delegate
If you find that the stress of being overloaded with tasks, either at home or at work, then don’t be afraid to delegate. You could hire a housecleaner, get your kids involved in chores, or bring a junior colleague in to do some of the leg-work on a project in the office. Not only will you benefit from lightening the load, it also allows others with ambition the opportunity to impress and take on more responsibility. In fact, the ability to delegate is a celebrated leadership skill, so start practicing and share some of the load!
Let it all out
Get the popcorn and tissue ready, it’s time for soppy -movie-night! Choose a romance or drama of epic proportions and allow yourself to get swept away on an imaginative, emotional roller-coaster ride. Getting lost in a tragic love story, for example, is a great way to induce a good, long, hearty cry, which does wonders for releasing pent up emotional tension.
Turn it up
When you’re driving in the car and your favourite song comes on the radio, forget about what your neighbouring driver will think when they stop next to you at the traffic lights – turn up the music and sing along at the top of your lungs! That’s an instant mood-lifter, right there.
Give a little
Being charitable doesn’t only benefit others; it also makes you feel great! Whatever your chosen cause, be selfless and volunteer some of your precious time or funds to help those less fortunate, and help yourself in the process.
