Step 1: a healthy breakfast a day keeps the doctor away
Good idea – reducing your kilojoule intake at lunch and dinner by substituting sugars with sweeteners.
Bad idea – undoing all that work by having a high-kilojoule, fat and sugar laden breakfast.
Our experts recommend a high fibre and good quality carbohydrate breakfast as the perfect way to get you started. You can look at foods like whole-wheat/rye toast, cereals (wholegrain), porridge, fruit and smoothies.
Step 2: Inject some colour into your life
Veggies are loaded with vitamins and fibre! Dropping the meat dish for plate of veggies once a week (minimum) will help reduce your total fat intake and assist with blood pressure control and cholesterol levels. It may also improve insulin resistance and blood vessel function.
Step 3: What lift?
Even though you may not feel it, your body is expelling energy all the time! Even while you’re scrolling down this page, you’re burning kilojoules. A great way to sneak in a bit of extra exercise is to take the stairs to get up or down those 2 or 3 floors. You could also try sending your printed documents to the printer down the corridor, and have a brisk walk there and back.
Step 4: Do a double take before you order
We all enjoy a meal at our favourite restaurant but if you see the words “fried, creamed or crumbed” then steer clear. A better option is to order the lower fat versions such as steamed, grilled, baked or sautéed option. Try keeping your portions to a minimum as well.
Step 5: Slip into your own skin for once
Humans are a funny lot. We come in all kinds of shapes, colours, ages and sizes. And like one may expect, our bodies work differently from one to the next. Rather than working against your body, accept yours and work with it to achieve optimal results.
Step 6: More water, less alcohol!
So the holidays are over…maybe you should be drinking more of the healthy stuff, like good old H2O and shelving the whisky, wine and beer. Plus, it’s well known that some certain types of alcohol have significantly more kilojoules than others so if you’re really planning on being healthy this year, then cut back on the alcohol as much as possible. And if you have to have that drink, make sure it’s the ‘lower kilojoule version.’
Step 7: Healthy snacks, only!
While it’s true that snacks are a great way to beat off that hunger while loading your body with vitamins and nutrients, snacking on fatty unhealthy food causes unwelcome weight gain. Best idea is to prepare healthy snacks ahead of time, and keep them handy at home or at the office.
