Powered by herbs and spices

Herbs and spices have been flavouring our food for centuries, but how much thought have you ever given to the nutritional value behind that garlic clove or oregano sprig? Probably none what so ever…

While combing the net for new ways to keep my immune system on the up I found a list of some really interesting herbs and spices that add power nutrients to your cooking.

1. Garlic: The god plant

Ancient Egyptians loved garlic so much they considered it holy and used it as currency. The compounds are effective against bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections. Garlic also enhances the immune system and has anti-tumour and antioxidant features.

2.Oregano: The heavy hitter

Pound for pound is the richest herb in antioxidant compounds. The antioxidant qualities are due to the high content of phenolic acids, flavonoids and colour compounds that act as anti-inflammatories. When eaten, oregano can protect against the common cold, influenza, fevers and indigestion.

3. Turmeric: A natural antiseptic

The stem part of the turmeric plant and it looks very similar to ginger. The spice is made by boiling, drying and grinding the root into the golden yellow powder we all know and love. The powder has antiseptic qualities when applied topically and often is used on cuts, burns and bruises.
